The Clarence Bicknell 2018 Centenary Fundfund thermometer

One of the objectives of the Clarence Bicknell Association when it was set up in 2012 was to prepare a significant celebration of Clarence Bicknell's life and work in 2018, the centenary of his death. These plans are fully underway, and funds are needed to complete the plan. At the same time, we are supporting the Museo Bicknell in Bordighera in their plans to renovate the entrance to the Museum from the street where the giant ficus tree has swallowed up the gate and the walkway. So we are cooperating with the Museo Bicknell in the fundraising campaign described on this page (and in a downloadable pdf in English)    (Scaricare il documento in italiano qui).

An initial donation of $15,000 (€12,000 euros) was secured in March 2017 from anonymous donors in the USA via the Clarence Bicknell Association.

Target €110,000. Donations invited between now and 17 July 2018 (the centenary of Clarence's death)

The official release from July 2017 reads as follows:

Dott.ssa Daniela Gandolfi (Director of the International Institute of Ligurian Studies (IISL) and of the Museo Bicknell) and Marcus Bicknell (chairman of the Clarence Bicknell Association and great grand nephew of Clarence) announce today the launch of a 6-month fund-raising campaign in preparation for the 2018 centenary of Clarence Bicknell. The funds will be used for two principal projects, firstly the renovation of the entrance to the garden of the Museo Bicknell and new signs to make it easier for visitors to find their way into the museum, and secondly, an exhibition of new Clarence Bicknell materials in 6 cities around Europe.

Our objective No.1

The progressive withdrawal of public funding from private cultural organisations like the IISL has created a deficit in the maintenance budget of the Museo Bicknell which it owns and runs. While the museum itself (built by Bicknell in 1888, 130 years ago) is not in immediate need of restoration, the entrance from the street and to the garden is in critical, even dangerous, condition. The giant ficus tree planted by Bicknell has swallowed up the gateway and obstructs the entrance. The renovation of the entrance to the garden of the Museo Bicknell and new signs to make it easier for visitors to find their way into the museum will be done in time for the centenary of Bicknell's deaths in 2018. The budget is 70,000 € Euros. The work will start after this funding appeal closes at the end of September 2017 and the official opening is planned for the Bicknelliana Week 14-23 July 2018.

Our objective No.2

Clarence Bicknell is part of the intangible cultural heritage of Liguria and the Alpes Maritimes (his archaeological work and his mountain house were in Italy but have been in France since 1946) and also of the network of researchers and writers all over Europe at the turn of the century. The centenary is therefore also an opportunity to tell a new generation about the 37,400 botanical drawings, plant specimens, rock engraving copies and letters which Bicknell left behind him. This will be done with a new biography of Bicknell by Valerie Lester, the film "The Marvels of Clarence Bicknell, seminars, online activities and an exhibition in Bicknell-related places such as Bordighera, Ventimiglia, Genova, Tende (Alpes-Maritimes, France), Nice, Monaco, Cambridge, Oxford and London. All these places have part of the Bicknell archive and several of them will contribute artefacts and drawings to be seen for the first time for 100 years. The exhibition elements and transport are budgeted at 40,000 € Euros but, similarly, the final exhibition and locations depend on the amount raised.

You can read more about the exhibition planning; download the pdf in English

One of the most enduring aspects of Clarence Bicknell's legacy was his desire to share  the things he discovered with other researchers and writers. Instead of hoarding them for his own delectation, interpretation and publication (as was the norm until the mid 20th century), he made sure that his collections were accessible in new and existing institutions to anyone who would like to work on them. Data now show that Bicknell specimens, drawings and letters are in 45 collections (mostly public) and 8 in private locations in 9 countries including the USA.

Many supporters of the Museo Bicknell, whether they live on the Riviera or not, will be approached by letter to ask for a donation specifically for this campaign. The IISL has opened a bank account dedicated to funds raised for the 2018 activities and the museum's support groups will be channelling funds raised into the one account. The $15,000, converted into Euros, is lodged in this dedicated account pending other donations. The 2018 fund will be halted at the end of September 2017 at which time the exact schedule of works and projects will be decided by the IISL.

New arrangements have been put into place to make donations easy from any country. The IISL Museo Bicknell has set up a new fund-raising bank account for donations in € euros by cheque, bank transfer or PayPal; Italian tax-payers are also urged to make out their charitable "8 per 1000" to the IISL. The international Clarence Bicknell Association receives donations in £ GBP pound sterling by cheque, transfer or PayPal. CAF America not only receives donations for the Clarence Bicknell Association (an eligible organisation for Donor Advised Gifts under US tax law and therefore not subject to vetting fees) in $ by cheque, transfer, credit card, PayPal or non-cash assets but also gives US tax payers the full benefit of tax deduction on charitable donations.
